چکیده

A three-dimensional, high-resolution model is employed to investigate the conditions prior to the 03 May 1999 tornado outbreak in order to ascertain if conditions were favorable for the formation of horizontal convective rolls. Horizontal convective rolls (HCRs) are an overlooked meteorological phenomena that may have significant implications on storm initiations in environments from which they develop. In the afternoon and evening of May 3, 1999, a devastating, yet relatively small scale, tornado outbreak occurred across the central and northern potions of Oklahoma and far southern Kansas. Most environmental conditions that existed in this region on 03 May 1999 pointed towards a severe weather outbreak, however, cloud coverage and heating posed major concerns for forecasters. In the smaller scale, it appears that a few conditions existed in the boundary layer in southwest Oklahoma which would be the impetus for what would be an active tornadic day. HCRs may have been one of these smaller scale phenomena that played a significant role in the convective initiation seen on this day. An overview of the conditions that existed on 03 May 1999 as well as an analysis of four idealized HCR simulations employing the ARPS model using conditions from this severe weather event are detailed here.

Impact of Magnetic Field on Convective Flow of a Micropolar Fluid with two Parallel Heat Source

A numerical study is performed to analysis the buoyancy convection induced by the parallel heated baffles in an inclined square cavity. The two side walls of the cavity are maintained at a constant temperature. A uniformly thin heated plate is placed at the centre of the cavity. The horizontal top and bottom walls are adiabatic. Numerical solutions of governing equations are obtained using the ...

Impact of Gravity on Thin-layer Cell Electrochemical Deposition

Electrochemical deposition (ECD) in thin cells with different orientations relative to gravity leads to complex stable and unstable physicochemical hydrodynamic flows. Here we study the impact of gravity on these flows through a theoretical macroscopic 3D model and its numerical simulation. The model describes the diffusive, migratory, and convective motion of ions in a fluid subject to an elec...

A High-Resolution Modeling Study of the 24 May 2002 Dryline Case during IHOP. Part I: Numerical Simulation and General Evolution of the Dryline and Convection

Results from a high-resolution numerical simulation of the 24 May 2002 dryline convective initiation (CI) case are presented. The simulation uses a 400 km 700 km domain with a 1-km horizontal resolution grid nested inside a 3-km domain and starts from an assimilated initial condition at 1800 UTC. Routine as well as special upper-air and surface observations collected during the International H2...

Numerical Simulation of Laminar Convective Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop of Water Based-Al2O3 Nanofluid as A Non Newtonian Fluid by Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD)

The convective heat transfer and pressure drop of water based Al2O3 nanofluid in a horizontal tube subject to constant wall temperature condition is investigated by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method. The Al2O3 nanofluid at five volume concentration of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2 % are applied as a non Newtonian power law and Newtonian fluid with experimentally measured properties of density...

Improving the natural convective heat transfer of a rectangular heatsink using superhydrophobic walls: A numerical approach

The effect of utilizing superhydrophobic walls on improving the convective heat transfer in a rectangular heatsink has been studied numerically in this paper. The vertical walls were kept at isothermal hot-and-cold temperatures and horizontal walls were insulated. The boundary condition on the walls was: no-slip for regular, and slip (with slip length of 500 µm) for superhydrophobic walls. By c...
